Is building IT inhouse a good idea? Unsurprisingly, BAT says no. But we have the evidence. A google using “bespoke” is worth the time.
The Post office Horizon scandal is an insight into IT failures with bespoke systems. Chairman, Nigel Railton said during the enquiries that one decision above all others was made that was “fundamentally wrong in hindsight”.
“The decision to build (their IT) in-house – …: I think based on my experience that this was always set up to fail in the first place.” His colleague Lloyd Thomas, at the same enquiry said the same:
“I sat in meeting after meeting, saying, ‘No bespoke, no bespoke, just leave it alone’, because once you start kludging it, you can’t rely on software upgrades coming from the supplier…You want to rely on software upgrades from the supplier and install them cleanly. If you kludge the system, you won’t be able to do it,” he said.
The firm used Horizon and Epos to help build their systems.
